About Sussex Counselling

Who are Sussex Counselling

Founded in 1985 by a group of practising counsellors seeking to establish a professional network to support them in their work, Sussex Counselling continues to offer to counsellors in East and West Sussex opportunities for peer support, on-going training, information about local events and practice, and support to student trainees.

We organise seminars and workshops on counselling theory and practice and we invite nationally known speakers to give lectures locally for the benefit of our members and the wider public. We operate a telephone information line and publish a quarterly newsletter, as well as an annual directory of qualified counsellors which is widely distributed to GPs, libraries and other public places.

Our membership includes a cross-section of professional therapists working in statutory and voluntary organisations throughout Sussex. Members listed in our directory also offer counselling as private practitioners to individuals, couples, families and groups. Their training and experience cover all the major theoretical models.

We encourage our members to take an active and responsible role in all aspects of their counselling work and to be aware of the broader implications of their practice, both in the community and nationally.

Sussex Counselling aims to:
• promote high quality counselling practice
• support counsellors practising in Sussex
• encourage counsellors in their on-going training
• promote counselling interests in the community
• facilitate the availability of information about counselling and practitioners to the general public.

Counsellors listed on this website

This website directory lists independent, fully qualified counsellors working in East and West Sussex, who have trained to a Diploma standard or beyond. All entrants are members of Sussex Counselling as well as of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) or an equivalent professional body, and agree to be answerable to that body's complaints procedure should there be cause for complaint. Accredited counsellors are those who have already completed several years' work with clients, and whose practice has been rigorously assessed by BACP or UKCP as having reached a proficient level. Counsellors must undergo at least 30 hours of continuing professional development each year to maintain their accreditation which remains the benchmark of the competent, ethical practitioner. It is also a requirement of this directory that counsellors have professional supervision for their work. This involves regular meetings with an experienced practitioner to discuss the content and process of their work. Supervision protects both the client and the counsellor, and it enables the therapist to work with greater insight and skill. All counsellors listed will have provided evidence of their supervision arrangements and copies of all their listed qualifications. They must also show proof of adequate levels of professional liability insurance.
