Inject Sussex Counselling With New Blood

Counselling Abuse Survivors
A new service for survivors of sexual abuse and rape has just been set up in Brighton.

Life Centre, a charity currently based in Chichester, is offering information, telephone counselling and group support programmes. Although they are not in a position at this time to provide financial support for face to face counselling they are developing a list of local experienced counsellors who will offer this service on the basis of a direct contract between the counsellor and client. If you are interested in joining Life Centre’s list of recommended counsellors or in helping to set up a steering committee, ring Jo Dello on 07793 362606 or visit www.lifecentre.uk.com

Directory Distribution & Marketing
Sussex Counselling relies on members to spread the Directory of Qualified Counsellors throughout the county and make it available to potential clients, but, with increasing professionalism and competition in the counselling world, we feel we need to put more emphasis on distribution and publicity. More clients are looking online to find a therapist and we need to increase the visibilty of our website as well as the traditional printed version. Do you have the skills and/or enthusiasm to help us do this?

Directory Co-ordinator:
More than 200 members will be listed in the 2008-2009 Sussex Counselling Directory. If you are one of them would you be willing to organise distribution and advertising around the county? With help and support from the committee and a network of members, could you come up with a targeted marketing strategy to make sure we reach potential clients and health professionals who might use our services? If so, please volunteer to become our first Directory Co-ordinator. Unfortunately we can’t afford to make this a paid position but all expenses will be met.

Local contacts:
If you are willing to be a pick up point for other members in your area we can arrange for several boxes of directories to be delivered to your home. You can then be included on the Local Contacts List which will be published in the next newsletter.

If you are interested in either of these roles, please email the editor on newsletter@sussex-counselling.co.uk.

Placements List
A list of organisations looking for voluntary counsellors (trainees or newly qualified) is produced by Sussex Counselling as a service to members. It is printed each year in the November issue and updated regularly on the website.

Three recent additions in Brighton are Morley Street Health Centre, the University of Sussex Counselling Services and Brighton Women’s Centre. Full details of these and eleven other organisations around the county can be found at www.sussex-counselling.co.uk

If you would like to be included please send details of your organisation to newsletter@sussex-counselling.co.uk

Inject Sussex Counselling With New Blood
New blood is needed for the Sussex Counselling committee – in fact, not just a drop but a massive transfusion.

After many years hard work for the association, a clutch of people are leaving to give themselves time for other things so the committee needs a large injection of people eager to build on the success of the past few years.

The Chair, Deputy Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Information Line Co-ordinator and Membership Secretary are all stepping down, plus several other members. Although some of the jobs will be shuffled around amongst existing committee members, at least five new people will be needed and more would be welcomed. So please put yourself forward to join the committee as a general member or to take on a specific role. This could be your chance to move the organisation even further along the effective path it’s been on for the past few years.

As the directory has grown and developed the job of distributing and advertising it has also become bigger and more important, so this year we are looking for somebody willing to take on the job of Directory Co-ordinator to make sure it is widely known about and available to the public. If you are concerned about publicising counselling, particularly if you have ideas or skills in advertising or marketing, please consider volunteering for this crucial role.

Sussex Counselling has always relied on its voluntary management committee, although increasingly it has felt the need to pay people to provide a professional, reliable service for its membership. The directory, newsletter, website and seminar programme are all produced by freelance employees but the committee are still responsible for overall planning, all other organisation and the finances.

The benefits to you of taking part are both personal and professional. Not only do you get to know other counsellors from all over Sussex but you can claim the time as Continuing Professional Development for accreditation, develop other skills and feel more involved with the counselling profession. As token recognition for your time and effort you are also entitled to free membership and entry in the directory of qualified counsellors, free entry to seminars and travel expenses paid to committee meetings.

If you would like to know more about becoming a committee member please contact Terry Woodhouse on 01273 563977 or email terryjwoodhouse@aol.com, or get in touch with any existing committee member. Or come along to the AGM on 12 July and volunteer.
